Ubuntu

March 16, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Installing Ubuntu is easier than installing windows. I am loving it. I only need to find linux equivalents for a couple of programs before I put it on all of my computers!

I need a good html/php/css editor with built in ftp, something like Dreamweaver to html-kit. (BlueFish or Eclipse?)

I also need my online poker.

Other than that I’m ready to put Ubuntu on every one of my computers.

More about the Gigabeat

January 20, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Now that I’ve been using it all week here are some more of my thoughts about the Toshiba Gigabeat:

Negative:

  • awkward position for AC adapter if you use it while it is plugged in (not a big deal).
  • battery life, not terrible, but i probably was a lot tougher on it than normal use would be.

Positive:

  • The windows mobile software on the thing rocks.
  • Controls are better than the iPods click wheel (partially due to the software i think).
  • Volume – this thing can pump out the noise.  I usually am at 12 or 13 out of 20.  With most other MP3 players I often have the volume maxed out.
  • size and weight – small and light for a 30Gb player.

Toshiba MES30VW Gigabeat Review

January 16, 2007 · Leave a Comment

amazon.comThis player is simply awesome.

For those of you that don’t know, I’ve been using a 20GB iPod that I got from one of those free iPod sites a long time ago. It suited my needs, but recently the screen got busted up on it and shuffle was about the only thing I could use. After a little bit of research I ordered myself the Toshiba MES20VW Gigabeat 30GB MP3 player.

I brought the Gigabeat home, charged it up, plugged it into my jukebox computer started up Windows Media Player 11 and it started copying music and converting videos to copy.  I have a large list of music so it took a while.

One drawback is that the Gigabeat won’t play divx files, but WMP automatically started to convert my divx music videos to a format that the Gigabeat will play.  It also syncs pictures which look great on the Gigabeat.

The two areas where the iPod excells at are the overall size of the player and the user interface.  The Gigabeat matches or beats the iPod in both areas.  Keep in mind I’m comparing the Gigabeat to my old maybe 3rd generation iPod, it does have the lovely click wheel.  The click wheel is awesome and might be the only thing missed about the iPod, but the Gigabeat’s navigation is better than anything else I’ve seen on any other players.  The size and weight isn’t even close, the iPod feels 2 times to 3 times as heavy as the Gigabeat, and the Gigabeat is probably a hair smaller.

One thing I didn’t think I’d like is switching from iTunes to Windows Media Player, but the new WMP 11 looks pretty nice.  I’ll probably miss iTunes, but WMP 11 is definetly the closest thing to something I’d want to replace iTunes with.  The overall package of Gigabeat + WMP beats out iTunes + iPod.  I liked a couple (okay, one) (net)podcast, but I never synced that to my iPod anyway.

Overall I’d give the Gigabeat a 9.7/10 rating, so far…..  By far the best of any MP3 players I’ve ever seen.

A day without music

January 15, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I forgot my broken iPod and headphones at home this morning, it hurts.

I did get a late start to my day.  Went to see an allergy doctor this morn at 9am to have some allergy tests done.  It turns out, I got pretty bad allergies (I already knew that). So I get to start up allergy shot in a couple of weeks!  Allergy testing does take a while, so I didn’t get to work until about 11am, then to the Pita Pit at noon, and back at the office for the rest of the afternoon.  so its been a pretty shortened day with almost none of the morning spent here, but without music its been painfull.

Lucky for me, I did get my gigabeat today!  Come back and get the full review of it later.

Adult film industry embracing HD DVD!

Adult film industry embracing HD DVD

I know how I’m going to answer the next time someone asks me if I’m going to buy HD DVD or Blu-ray.  Not that I have the need to buy high definition porn, but i certainly want to have that option open to me in the future, who doesn’t.

Really that may not be my exact reasoning, but maybe it is.  I don’t really see both of these formats as being successfull next to each other.  one of them is going to have to win a format war and this seems to be a really big plus towards HD DVD.

Maybe I’m a microsoft lover too, i just don’t know if that could have anything to do with it….

I didn’t update before I left work today, so i’m finally getting back online. i made it all day without skipping one song on shuffle all. i listened to way too much elton john, but i survived. thank god my gigabeat was shipped today, but unfortunately as of right now it is way out in new jersey. if you are looking for a good hard drive mp3 player, cnet rates it pretty high. i’ll have my full review after i get it.

the broken ipod challenge

January 10, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I challenge you all to do this as well, at least those of you that have the type of job that allows you to sit with headphones on listening to music as you work.  I guess that mite not be many of you, but at least try to imagine yourself doing it and decide if you could do it or not.  It also is only for people who have their own mp3 players, and preferably big ones, 20GB+.

On with it…

Recently I broke my iPod’s screen, but it still plays music just fine.  I know the menu system enough to get myself to the “Shuffle All” option on the main menu, but scrolling through artists is impossible.  So now I sit and have shuffle all going all day long.  Today I decided that i was going to put it on hold and not skip a single song all day.  I’m going to live at the mercy of the party shuffle.  I’m gonna try at least.

I’ll keep updates coming.  I’ve learned a lot about my music collection already.  It’s gonna be hard.

the screen on my freakin ipod is facked up, so i’m thinking about getting a

amazon.com

which i (i think) wirelessly stream music to the

amazon.com

with the addition of the

amazon.com

and then hook that up to the

amazon.com

and all the video goes to the new

amazon.com

all for the great price of $239.99 + $399.99 + $99.71 + $499.00 + $1299.99 =  $2539.67!  I usually leave that much money in my pockets thru the laundry each week.
