A couple days ago I wrote about how I missed using iTunes since getting the Toshiba Gigabeat, and how I had high hopes for an open source/cross platform media player Songbird. Well one of the Songbird developers came and left a comment and said they will be developing whatever it is that will allow me to use the Gigabeat with the Songbird.
I was impressed that someone from Songbirdnest.com would care enough to leave a comment here, where most of the faithfull readers have never tapped the keys in the comment area. So for those of you who don’t know anything about Songbird, here are a couple things that I like, and a couple things that I would like:
Like:
- Same artist/album/song navigation as iTunes, beats WMP hands down
- Cross Platform (Windows, Linux, Mac) – some day I fully plan on dropping Windows in favor or Ubuntu or some other Linux on my jukebox PC
- Nice mini player with a nice “Jump to” feature
- Songbird is open-source and has a lot of developers creating very usefull addons
- Can be used with many online music stores, including eMusic, which sells DRM-free music. This will be my new music store for sure!
Wish-List:
- Something similar to iTunes Party Shuffle. I like shuffle but I really like the ability to right click and “play next in party shuffle”
- Support for my Gigabeat (which is coming very soon as I pointed out earlier), this means it will also probably support your mp3 player.
- CD importing and burning (also planned for future releases). Right click on album name –> “burn cd” would be a nice option.
- Windows Toolbar mode, even though I will eventually use the Linux version
Maybe I’ll think of more later. Overall this is a great product, even though it is in the very early stages of development. Once they get this to a 1.0 release I think this will be the most essential software that I will have on my computer. Well maybe after PokerStars….
